Liane Lang

Artist in Residence 2021/22

Liane Lang is a London-based artist who has exhibited widely both in the UK and internationally, including the Musée de Beaux Arts Calais, PS1 New York and Kunstverein Heidelberg. Her work is held in numerous collections, such as Arts Council England, the Royal Academy of Arts, the Saatchi Collection, Deutsche Bank, Kunstverein Bregenz and the Collection of the Kunstamt Spandau, Berlin. She has a special interest in statues and historic monuments and whilst her practice is primarily photographic she often uses alternative processes and printing on a variety of materials including stone, concrete and metals.

She came to Wirksworth in the summer of 2021 and spent her time looking at the idea of landscape as memorial. She was particularly interested in exploring the region for objects and features that retain and retell histories, both natural and man-made and to talk to people about their experience of the landscape.

Her residency concluded in two exhibitions at the 2022 Festival. TouchStone which included sculpture, photography, drawing and print, using found objects and materials like lead, stone and relics of industrial and farming machinery.

Also Included in the exhibition was Aggregate, a video collaboration with sound artist Phillip Benjamin Schlotter, commissioned by the Chur Festival of Jazz Switzerland and Touch Stone, a film by Tom Dwyer documenting Liane’s time in the area.

Her second exhibition, The Lead Cycle was an installation of printed lead, stitching together the landscapes and ruins of lead mining and industry.
