Artist Statement

My expressive abstract paintings are an interpretation of how I encounter the world, combined with my desire to explore the painted surface. With each layer, I focus on creating the illusion of light and movement, eluding to a feeling of landscape or architecture.

Inspired by the visceral nature of paint, I use a variety of tools, marks and contrasting elements to create a rich surface that is only partially revealed.

I am intrigued by how we perceive, and through the possibilities of paint, aim to bring joy and colour whilst also challenging these perceptions and emotions.

Paths we Take, Acrylic on Wood Panel, 50cm x 50cm (framed size 54cm x 54cm). Paths we Take, suggests a journey, just as much a journey in paint as the landscape it depicts. It playfully allows the viewer to see the land as a selection of colours and forms from a non traditional perspective.
Of the Land, Acrylic on Wood Panel, 30cm x 30cm (framed size 44cm x 44cm). Pathways of graffiti suggest movement through the landscape. Inspired by a sense of the structure and form of the land, created by adding and subtracting paint.

Joyous Confection, Acrylic on Wood Panel, 30cm x 30cm (framed size 44cm x 44cm). Inspired by the suggested spaces that are created by the layering of paint. A confection of tones and marks that bounce between freedom and control.

Whispers, Acrylic on Wood Panel, 50cm x 50cm (framed size 54cm x 54cm). Inspired by flowing, whispering wind or psithurism (the sound of leaves blowing in the wind). My expressive layers of paint and flowing marks attempt to create the visual sound and emotion.
