Artist Statement

I am a ceramic artist working in Stoke on Trent. I make domestic ware inspired by the Staffordshire pottery tradition and mid century design. I combine the precision of hand building techniques and the gestural nature of slip decoration and stencil work. The emphasis of the joins is exaggerated by using a contrasting coloured slip.
my work relates to coastal locations. My drawings of birds predominantly sea and wading birds are applied to my work as ceramic transfers over a transparent glaze. Each piece is hand made and therefore different. I enjoy working within a limited colour range of blue and white. In the decoration of my tiles I take a freer and more painterly approach as a background for my drawings.
