Artist Statement

Jane Clowes Ceramics – Artist Statement.

I am a ceramic artist based in Stoke on Trent working from the studio I built in my back garden.

I produce slab built functional earthenware pieces. My bird drawings are applied onto the ware as enamel transfers.
I am inspired by the Staffordshire pottery tradition of blue and white ware and mid century design incorporating patterns in my designs.
My work also relates to coastal locations and our sea birds.
I enjoy combining the precision of hand building techniques with visible joins using a contrasting coloured slip. My work is made and decorated flat then constructed or ‘wrapped’ into the functional pieces.
