Artist Statement

I often sketch here. Then I work on my ideas back in the studio. So my work is essentially of the landscape.

Inspiration: It’s the rocks and the drama of natural and man-made action at work. Also I love the local architecture and the maze of countless footpaths.

But it’s not just people that lived and died here, leaving us clues to our past. We discover that Megabeasts were here too…some still lurking beneath our feet.

And clothing this fascinating landscape are such beautiful woods and valleys.

It’s inspiring!

Methods: mostly oil and acrylic paint, inks, prints and drawing.

'In the arms of the Mother Tree' pencil, 92x72cm. The ancient horse chestnut enfolds the storyteller and whispers...what is it whispering?
'The Discovery of Wirksworth's Woolly Rhino's inks, natural earth pigment. 54x72cm I drew this axial bone in the Oxford museum where WR is now, showing the miners in the Dream Cave and hinting at Mary Buckland who catalogued him.

'Old Leadminers' Track, Sheldon'. acrylic, 55x55cm. This was our picnic site after plodding along the same path as those miners, centuries ago.

'What next?...the stage is set in this abandoned quarry next to the NSC' mostly acrylic and ink 1.85x 1.5 metres. This is a huge rock amphitheatre with a flat, mossy green floor, just waiting for the next act. So peaceful now...just the mewing of buzzards overhead and the chatter of jays.
