My installation will combine poetry, film, photographs and audio and bring to life the story of my father’s experiences as a Royal Signalman in the North African Desert War. At its heart is a photo-album, the only surviving record of a friendship between two signalmen: one, my father a young man from colonial Ceylon, the other an unknown photographer; two men finding a connection through mutual support, respect and a love of photography. The installation will also document my father’s return from the war, his marriage to a Yorkshire woman and our family life in Leeds. I have a venue.
