Artist Statement

My work is strongly influenced by a visit to Japan in 1997. In particular Nara, the Ryoanji gardens and
Mashiko, with its kilns and potteries, provided the inspiration for my interpretations of Japanese traditional forms.

My starting point from an initial idea is usually a small model and drawings. Test pieces follow exploring form, scale, texture, mechanical strength etc.

I design and make complex, precise structures with a visual impact offering a sense of tranquility and harmony. Those who view my work will hopefully see something of these intended qualities and connect with the piece in their own way.
