Cluster school art project 2025

Zentangling and celebrating the artwork of Maria Golub

Tangling trees
In 2025 Anthony Gell is celebrating 60 years of comprehensive education in Wirksworth. To commemorate the event an oak tree will be planted in the grounds of Anthony Gell during Wirksworth Arts Festival weekend. This is the reason we are basing our cluster art project for this year around the theme of trees (actual trees, tree shapes, animals which live in trees, tree roots etc.)
I think it’s going to be our biggest exhibition yet. The final length of the display will be approximately 20 metres and the height will be 1.2 metres. We have over 700 children taking part in the project which is amazing.

What is zentangling and what does zentangle mean?

Zentangle comes from the word ‘zen’ meditation and ‘tangle’ (entangled and interwoven) and combines creativity with meditation. It calms, relaxes and is fun.

Stroke by stroke, simple lines are repeated onto paper. Zentangle is an easy method to learn because it consists of structured patterns . With every line, you can dive further in to the world of tangles. In a short time tangles (also called ‘patterns’) turn in to amazing 3D, graphic, elaborate, beautiful tiles. They are unplanned and can be abstract.

Incidentally, a beautiful work of art emerges.

About Maria Golub

Maria Golub, a Ukrainian artist from Cherkasy, born in 1990, has developed a distinctive style that blends elements of painting, graphic art, design, and research, which she terms “magical realism”.

With a unique 3D effect which shifts with the viewer’s perspective, her art sparkles like it is covered in light, giving a sense of wonder and enchantment.
